Daniel Beaty, author of the Obie Award-winning solo show Emergence-SEE!, has been named Hartford Stage’s Aetna American Voices Playwright in Residence for the 2007-2008 season. The year-long residency will include the commissioning of a new work to be presented in fall 2008, ongoing development of his new play, Resurrection, and the mentoring of young local playwrights through the theatre’s Write On! program.

Emergence-SEE, which concerns the emergence of a slave ship in present-day New York City, will be presented at Hartford Stage on Sunday, November 4 as part of its annual Brand: NEW Fall Festival of New Work. The festival will also include readings of Michele Lowe’s Inana, Jose Rivera’s Boleros for the Disenchanted, Cheryl Davis and Doug Cohen’s musical Barnstormer, Victoria Stewart’s Hardball, and Emilie Bick’s Number of People, starring Edward Asner as an aging, Polish-born Holocaust survivor.
