Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre is postponing its world premiere production of the musical Cry-Baby because the show would not be able to transfer immediately to Broadway, due to a shortage of theaters. The show was scheduled to run February 13-March 4; it is now expected to premiere at 5th Avenue in a future season, according to David Armstrong, the theater’s producing artistic director.

The show’s slot in the theater’s current season will be filled by a production of Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, the musical about the late rock ‘n roll singer. The cast and creative team will be announced in November. Buddy played on Broadway during the 1990-1991 season, running for 225 performances.

Cry-Baby is based on the 1990 John Waters film of the same title, starring Johnny Depp. It is a spoof of 1950s films about the romance between a “good girl” and a “bad boy.”
