Marla Schaffel is set to star in the title role of Carmelina, the second show in the York Theatre Company’s “Musicals in Mufti” staged concert series. Performances will take place October 20-22 at the York’s home space in Saint Peter’s Theatre on East 54th Street.

Loosely based on the 1968 film Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell, Carmelina tells the story of an Italian woman who, for 17 years, has received support from three former GIs — each of whom believes he is the father of her daughter. Her scheme unravels when the men come to her small village for a reunion. The 1979 musical features a book by Alan Jay Lerner and Joseph Stein, music by Burton Lane, lyrics by Lerner, and additional lyrics by Barry Harman.

Schaffel received a Tony Award nomination, a Drama Desk Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Award for her performance in the title role of Jane Eyre. Other Broadway credits include Titanic and Les Misérables; additionally, she has starred in national tours of My Fair Lady, Evita, and The Sound of Music.

The cast of the York’s Carmelina also includes Nat Chandler, Joseph Kolinski, Daniel Marcus, Camille Saviola, Alison Walla, Ray Wills, and Eli Zoller. Michael Leeds is the show’s director. The first presentation of this season’s “Musicals in Mufti” series, Take Me Along, begins performances tonight (October 13) and will play for five performances this weekend.
