Niall Buggy, David Costabile, Alan Cox, Dermot Crowley, Michael FitzGerald, Morgan Hallett, Geraldine Hughes, Susan Lynch, Graeme Malcolm, and Chandler Williams will star in the Manhattan Theatre Club’s production of Brian Friel’s Translations, which begins performances at the Biltmore Theatre on January 4. The production, directed by Tony Award winner Garry Hynes, is currently playing at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey through October 29.

Translations is set in a rural 19th-century Irish village facing the arrival of a group of British military engineers who are here to map the area and rename its places. The presence of these outsiders forces the inhabitants to confront a changing and uncertain future, and under this shadow an impossible romance between a soldier and a village girl begins. The show was previously seen on Broadway in 1995. Friel’s many other works include Dancing at Lughnasa, Philadelphia, Here I Come!, and Faith Healer.

The show’s creative team includes Francis O’Connor (sets and costumes), Davy Cunningham (lighting), John Leonard (sound), and Sam Jackson (original music).
Hynes won the Tony Award for The Beauty Queen of Leenane and directed DruidSynge, which was seen this past summer as part of the Lincoln Center Festival.

Buggy, who will play Hugh, starred on Broadway in The Weir and received the Obie, Drama Desk, and Clarence Derwent Awards for the Off-Broadway production of Friel’s The Aristocrats.
