The L.A. engagement is part of one of two U.S. national tours. The Broadway production of The Lion King, now in the ninth year of its run, recently relocated to the Minskoff Theatre. The show is the winner of six Tony Awards including Best Musical, eight Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards, the New York Drama Critics award for Best Musical, the Evening Standard Award for the Theatrical Event of the Year, two Olivier Awards, a Theatre World Award, the Astaire Award for Outstanding Choreography, two Drama League Awards, and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
Adapted from Disney's popular animated movie, The Lion King follows the adventures of the royal lion cub Simba in his quest to grow up and learn what it means to be a king. The musical's book is by Roger Allers, who co-directed the animated film, and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the screenplay. The score features Elton John and Tim Rice's music from the film, along with three new songs by John and Rice and additional musical material by Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor, and Hans Zimmer. The production is directed by Julie Taymor, who won a Tony for her work; it features choreography by Garth Fagan, scenic design by Richard Hudson, costume design by Taymor, and lighting design by Donald Holder.
