Brian Murray to Star in Guthrie’s Edgardo Mine

Brian Murray will star in the Guthrie Theatre’s production of Alfred Uhry’s Edgardo Mine, set to run November 4-December 17 and to open officially on November 10. The show will be directed by Mark Lamos.

Based on David I. Kertzer’s book The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mine, the play is set in Italy in the 1850s — a time when, under Papal law, a Christian child could not be raised by Jews. Edgardo, who was secretly baptized as an infant by a housemaid, is taken from his home and raised as a Catholic. His mother battles for custody of him but suffers her own crisis of faith. Uhry’s previous works include Driving Miss Daisy, The Last Night of Ballyhoo, the book for the musical Parade, and the book and lyrics for The Robber Bridegroom. He is the winner of a Pulitzer Prize, a Tony Award, and an Academy Award (for the screenplay of Driving Miss Daisy).

The cast of the Guthrie production also includes Jennifer Regan, Ron Menzel, Stephen D’Ambrose, Nancy Rodriguez, J.C. Cutler, Tyson Forbers, and Sasha Andreev. The creative team is headed by Riccardo Hernandez (sets), Candice Donnelly (costumes), Mimi Jordan Sherrin (lighting), Reid Rejsa (sound), and Robert Waldman (original music). Lamos has worked extensively at the Guthrie as both an actor and director; among his Broadway credits are Seascape, The Rivals, and Our Country’s Good.

Murray, who will play Pope Pius IX, is a three-time Tony Award nominee for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, The Little Foxes, and The Crucible. His many other Broadway credits include The Rivals, A Small Family Business, Uncle Vanya, Racing Demon, and Da.
