Nun But the Best: Eileen Atkins to Replace Cherry Jones in Doubt

Eileen Atkins will replace Cherry Jones as Sister Aloysius in John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt on January 10, 2006. Jones and her co-star Brian F. O’Byrne will leave the show on January 8; no replacement for O’Byrne has yet been named.

A four-time Tony nominee, Atkins’ Broadway credits include The Killing of Sister George,Vivat! Vivat! Regina, Indiscretions, and The Retreat from Moscow. Off-Broadway, she has starred in Prin, A Room of One’s Own, Vita and Virginia, and The Unexpected Man. She has won numerous prizes, including the Evening Standard Award and the Olivier Award, for her performances in London. In addition to her acting work, Atkins co-created the TV series Upstairs Downstairs.

Doubt has won every major theatrical award, including the Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, Obie Award, Lucille Lortel Award, and Drama Critics Circle Award. Directed by Doug Hughes, the Broadway production co-stars Adriane Lenox and Heather Goldenhersh.
