Rachel Maddow and Elizabeth Marvel to Discuss the Work of Tony Kushner as Part of Public Forum’s Drama Club Series

The Public Theater will kick off this season of its Public Forum program with its new Drama Club series. The Drama Club is described as “a book club for plays that will feature one-night-only readings and discussions.” This season, the club will examine Kia Corthron’s Life by Asphyxiation, Tony Kushner’s Only We Who Guard the Mystery Shall Be Unhappy, and Thornton Wilder’s The Long Christmas Dinner. Jeremy McCarter curates the series.
On October 20, Life by Asphyxiation will be read and discussed by Wendell Pierce (The Wire); Kirk Bloodsworth, the first man exonerated from death row based on DNA evidence; and others. Then, on November 3, Rachel Maddow and Elizabeth Marvel will explore Tony Kushner’s Only We Who Guard the Mystery Shall Be Unhappy. The series’ final offering will be Thornton Wilder’s one-act The Long Christmas Dinner, which will be read and discussed by actor and playwright Lisa Kron; media theorist Douglas Rushkoff; Thornton Wilder’s nephew and literary executor, Tappan Wilder; Anne-Marie Slaughter, the president and CEO of the New America Foundation; her son, Edward Moravcsik; and others.
Public Forum is series of conversations and performances that feature leading voices in politics, media, and the arts. It is in its fourth year.
