Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman to Star in Film Version of Les Miserables

Tony Award winner Hugh Jackman will play Jean Valjean and Oscar winner Russell Crowe will play Javert in the musical film adaptation of Les Miserables, according to Variety. Oscar winner Tom Hooper will direct the film, which will be released in December, 2012.

The screenplay will be written by playwright William Nicholson, based upon the Victor Hugo book and the stage musical adaptation.


Cameron Mackintosh is producing the film, which will be utilizing the musical’s original score from Claude-Michel Schoenberg and Alain Boublil.

Jackman won the Tony for his portrayal of the late singer Peter Allen in The Boy From Oz. Among his other stage credits are A Steady Rain and Oklahoma! His film credits include X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Australia, The Prestige, and The Fountain.

Crowe won the Oscar for Gladiator and received Oscar nominations for A Beautiful Mind and The Insider.


Hooper won the 2010 Oscar for his direction of The King’s Speech.
