The Public Theater’s production of Richard Nelson’s Sweet and Sad opened September 11. Playwright Nelson has directed his script.

Along with cast members, the guests at the opening night celebration included Public Theater artistic director Oskar Eustis, Tony Award winning actor Bill Irwin and Tony Award nominee Patrick Breen.

The play is a follow-up to the playwright’s That Hopey Changey Thing and focuses on the liberal Apple family of Rhinebeck, New York as they convene for a Sunday lunch on September 11, 2011. The company features Jon DeVries, Shuler Hensley, Maryann Plunkett, Laila Robins, Jay O. Sanders, and J. Smith-Cameron.

The creative team includes scenic and costume designer Susan Hilferty, lighting designer Jennifer Tipton, and sound designer Scott Lehrer.
