Academy Award-winning director Jonathan Demme attended the Saturday, September 10 performance of Silence! The Musical, playing Off-Broadway at Theatre 80 St. Mark’s, and visited with the cast and creators of the musical afterwards.

The show, with a book by Hunter Bell and music and lyrics by Jon and Al Kaplan, is an unauthorized parody of the thriller Silence of the Lambs, which focuses on rookie FBI agent Clarice Starling as she uses her relationship with Dr. Hannibal Lecter to hunt serial killer Buffalo Bill. Christopher Gattelli has directed and choreographed the production.

The company includes Brent Barrett (Lecter) and Jenn Harris (Starling), along with Stephen Bienskie, Harry Bouvy, Ashlee Dupré, Deidre Goodwin, Jeff Hiller, Howard Kaye, Nick McGough, and Lucia Spina.

Demme directed the original film version of The Silence of the Lambs, for which he won the Oscar for Best Director. He has also directed for the stage, helming MCC Theatre’s production of Family Week. Demme attended the stage production of Silence! accompanied by the film version’s producers, cinematographer and production designer.
