Opera Star Salvatore Licitra Has Died

Opera singer Salvatore Licitra has died in Sicily, nine days after he was severely injured in a motor-scooter accident, according to The New York Times. He was 43.

Licitra came to fame in 2002 when he subsituted for Luciano Pavarotti at the Metropolitan Opera for two performances of Puccini’s Tosca.

He later appeared in numerous other operas at the Metropolitan, including Un Ballo in Maschera, Cavalleria Rusticana, Il Trittico and Turandot., and also performed at. La Scala, the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera in London, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, among other venues.

He also recorded numerous CDs, including an album of duets with tenor Marcelo Álvarez.

Survivors include his parents and a brother.
