The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has announced the winners of its 2011 MacArthur Fellowships, often called “the genius grants.” Each fellow will receive $500,000 in “no strings” support over the next five years.

Among the fellows is Francisco Nuñez, founder and artistic director of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City, who has been recognized for his work in expanding access to choral singing for young people coming from inner-city to elite schools and redefining the artistic and expressive boundaries of the youth choir.

Other 2011 MacArthur Fellows include Jad Abumrad of WNYC Radio, jazz percussionist and composer Dafnis Prieto, poet Kay Ryan, poet and translator A.E. Stallings, and cellist Alisa Weilerstein.
