Neil Armfield, Jersey Boys, and More Win 2010 Helpmann Awards

The 2010 Helpmann Awards, which are Australia’s equivalent to the Tonys, were presented on Monday, September 6 at Opera Theatre, Sydney Opera House.

Jersey Boys won for Best Musical, as well as for Ron Melrose and Luke Hunter’s music direction. Melbourne Theatre Company’s production of Richard III won Best Play, with director Simon Phillips and actors Ewen Leslie, Humphrey Bower and Alison Whyte also winning for their work in the production. Opera Australia’s production of Peter Grimes won for Best Opera, as well as for director Neil Armfield and actors Stuart Skelton and Andrew Foote.

Acting winners also included Julie Forsyth (Happy Days), Mitchell Butel (Avenue Q), Michala Banas (Avenue Q), Taryn Fiebig (Bliss), Luke Joslin (Avenue Q), Emma Matthews (La Sonnambula), and Christina O’Neill (Avenue Q).
