John McMartin and Justina Machado have joined the cast of John Guare’s new play, A Free Man of Color, which will begin previews at the Vivian Beaumont Theater on October 21. The show, which will open officially on November 18, will be directed by Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe.

The play is a freewheeling epic set in 1802 New Orleans, and concerns Jacques Cornet, a new-world Don Juan and the wealthiest inhabitant of this sexually charged and racially progressive city.

The company will feature, as previously announced, Tony Award winner Jeffrey Wright as Cornet, along with Mos (aka Mos Def), Paul Dano, Peter Bartlett, Veanne Cox, Sara Gettelfinger, Reg Rogers, Arnie Burton, Nicole Beharie, Rosal Colon, Joseph Marcell, NIck Mennell, Teyonah Parris, Brian Reddy, Triney Sandoval, Robert Stanton, Wendy Rich Stetson, and David Emerson Toney. In addition, Yao Ababio, Derric Harris, Esau Pritchett, Jerome Stigler, and Senfaub Stoney have joined the cast.

The creative team includes David Rockwell (sets), Ann Hould-Ward (costumes), Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer (lighting), Scott Stauffer (sound), Jeanine Tesori (original music), and Hope Clarke (choreography).
