Tony Award nominee Craig Lucas and Grammy Award nominee Marius de Vries are collaborating on a musical version of King Kong – Live on Stage. Daniel Kramer is scheduled to direct the show, which is aiming for a Broadway production as early as 2013.

The musical has been developed with the cooperation of the estate of Merian C. Cooper, who created the character. It has been given a workshop staging and the creators now are making revisions. No further information about the piece is available at this time.

Lucas received Tony Award nominations for his play Prelude to a Kiss and for the book to the musical The Light in the Piazza. His many other plays include Reckless, Missing Persons, The Singing Forest, Prayer for My Enemy, Dying Gaul, and This Thing of Darkness.

De Vries was music director of the film Moulin Rouge! and, with Nellee Hooper, was co-composer for Romeo + Juliet. He’s written the scores for Eye of the Beholder, Easy Virtue, and recently Kick Ass. He was among the Grammy nominees for Madonna’s Ray of Light, as well as the album Contact From The Underworld Of Redboy.
