Lighting Designer Jennifer Tipton Recieves MacArthur Grant

Lighting designer Jennifer Tipton has been named a recipient of The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation’s so-called “genius grant.” Along with the other 24 recipients, Tipton will receive $500,000 in “no strings” support over the next five years.

Tipton, age 71, has won Tony Awards for her work on The Cherry Orchard and Jerome Robbins’ Broadway. Her many other Broadway credits include Happy End, Sophisticated Ladies, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Hurlyburly, La Bete, Wrong Mountain, and In the Summer House. She has also worked extensively Off-Broadway and in regional theater, as well as with such dance companies and choreographers as Paul Taylor, Alvin Ailey, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Twyla Tharp. She is also an instructor at the Yale School of Drama.
