Marcel Marceau, the world’s leading mime artist, has died in Paris at age 84. Published reports did not specify the cause of his death.

Marceau began his acting career in 1946, after serving as a member of the French resistance in World War II. In 1947, he created his signature character, Bip, and he founded his own theatrical company in 1949. Marceau appeared twice on Broadway in special engagements — in 1955 and 1983.

Marceau appeared frequently in film and television throughout his career, primarily as himself, winning a special Emmy Award in 1956. His numerous credits included The Ed Sullivan Show, Barbarella, Silent Movie, and Joseph’s Gift.
