Stephen Spinella will play all the adult male roles in the Broadway production of the musical Spring Awakening. The show will open at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on December 10, with previews now slated to begin on November 16. Spinella replaces Frank Wood, who played these roles in the Off-Broadway production at the Atlantic Theater. Casting for the adult female roles will be announced at a later date.

Based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play of the same title, about teenagers coming of age in Germany, Spring Awakening has music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater. As at the Atlantic, the show will be directed by Michael Mayer and will feature choreography by Bill T. Jones, sets by Christine Jones, costumes by Susan Hilferty, and lighting by Kevin Adams.

The entire youth ensemble of the Atlantic production is on board for the Broadway run, including Jonathan Groff as Melchior, Lea Michele as Wendla, and John Gallagher, Jr. as Mortiz. The cast also includes Skylar Astin (Georg), Lilli Cooper (Martha), Gideon Glick (Ernst), Brian Johnson (Otto), Lauren Pritchard (Ilse), Phoebe Strole (Anna), Jonathan B. Wright (Hanschen), and Remy Zaken (Thea).

Spinella is a two-time Tony Award winner for his work as Prior Walter in the two-part Broadway production of Angels in America, and a Tony nominee for James Joyce’s The Dead. His other Broadway credits include A View from the Bridge, Electra, and Our Town, and he starred in the Los Angeles premiere of Stuff Happens.
