Full Cast, Creative Team Set for In My Life

The full cast and creative team for In My Life has been announced. Written and directed by Joe Brooks, the Grammy- and Oscar-winning composer of the song “You Light Up My Life,” the show is scheduled to begin previews at the Music Box Theater on September 30 and to open on October 20.

In My Life concerns JT, a musician with Tourette’s Syndrome, who falls for Jenny, a spunky young woman who works for The Village Voice. Unbeknownst to them, they are participants in God’s first reality opera, which is being directed in Heaven by Winston, a former accountant. Also in heaven, overseeing the action, are JT’s mother, Elizabeth, and his sister, Vera, both of whom died in a tragic car accident.

In addition to previously announced cast members Jessica Boevers (Jenny), Christopher Hanke (JT), Roberta Gumbel (Elizabeth), and Chiara Navarra (Vera), the show’s cast includes David Turner (Winston), along with Michael J. Farina, Michael Halling, Laura Jordan, Courtney Balan, Jonathan Groff, Carmen Keels, Kilty Reidy, and Brynn Williams.

The creative team includes choreographer Richard Stafford, set designer Allen Moyer, costume designer Catherine Zuber, lighting designer Christopher Akerlind, projection designer Wendall K. Harrington, and hair designer Tom Watson. Zuber and Akerlind are the winners of the 2005 Tony Award for their work on The Light in the Piazza.

Brooks first gained success in the 1970s as a writer of commercial jingles for such products as Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, Maxwell House Coffee, and Dial Soap. In addition, he has scored numerous films, including The Lords of Flatbush and the Oscar-winning The Garden of the Fitzi-Continis. Brooks also wrote and directed the 1977 film, You Light Up My Life, which starred Didi Conn, in addition to penning the award-winning title tune. More recently, Brooks composed and co-wrote the lyrics to Metropolis: The Musical, which has been seen in London and throughout the US. It will premiere in New York next spring in a production to be directed by Richard Foreman.
