New Jersey Rep Announces 2004-2005 Season
The season will begin with the New Jersey premiere of Lee Blessing’s Whores, October 7-November 14. The play is inspired by the true story of three American nuns and a Catholic lay worker who are murdered in El Salvador; the action takes place in the mind of a deranged general who is being tried in a United States civil court after receiving political asylum. Next up, January 13-February 20, will be the world premiere of Mary Fengar Gail’s Touch of Rapture, a romantic comedy/drama celebrating the love of art and the art of love: A dying artist bestows her gift of sculpting upon her husband and his life spirals out of control as he tries to balance the artistic and commercial sides of the art business.
On March 4, 5, and 6, New Jersey Rep will present its annual Theatre Brut Festival of Short Plays, comprising more than a dozen works on the subject of sacrifice. Next up will be the world premiere of Ruth Wolff’s Aviators, March 31-May 8; the play tells the story of an academic couple whose relationship is strained by events from their past and the dissolution of an intricate fantasy life that forces them to deal with the pain of reality.
The East Coast premiere of Ten Percent of Molly Snyder follows, May 19-June 26; Richard Strand’s comedy concerns a woman who goes to the Division of Motor Vehicles to fix an error on her driver’s license and ends up in a dizzying maze of red tape. Next will come the world premiere of Vincent Sessa’s A Child’s Guide to Innocence, July 7-August 14; the play looks at the lives of three generations of an Italian American family dealing with tradition, religion, war, secrecy, and love. Following an August 25-October 2 production of a yet-to-be-announced play will be the world premiere of Dan Dietz’s Tilt Angel (October 14-November 20), a blues-infused fairy tale about a working-class Southern family struggling with grief and loss in the aftermath of a plane crash.
