Tony Kushner will read from Caroline, Or Change, the musical that he wrote in collaboration with composer Jeanine Tesori, at the Coliseum Books store located across from Bryant Park at 11 West 42nd Street (between 5th and 6th avenues) on Wednesday, September 22 at 6pm. The event, which is free and open to the public, will also include a talk and a book signing of the published editions of the musical and of Kushner’s watershed play Angels in America.

Caroline, or Change tells the story of Caroline, a black maid, and Noah, the son of the Jewish family for whom she works, as they struggle to find an identity for their friendship. Set in 1963 Louisiana against the backdrop of the Kennedy assassination and the Civil Rights Movement, the musical confronts issues of culture, community, race, and class. It premiered in the fall of 2003 at the Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival, directed by George C. Wolfe. That critically acclaimed production transferred to Broadway and received multiple Tony Award nominations.
