For its fourth annual benefit concert at the New Amsterdam Theatre last evening, The Actors’ Fund of America presented a star-studded production of Hair, the “American tribal love-rock musical” with music by Galt MacDermot, book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado. Here’s a photo from the opening number, “Aquarius,” with soloist Lillias White held aloft and Harris Doran, foreground, as Claude.
Among the concert’s many highlights: Lea DeLaria, in her glory, performing “Donna” with a little help from her friends…
…Euan Morton performing “Manchester, England” with Harris Doran and the tribe…
…Adam Pascal proclaiming “I Got Life,” much to the consternation of Michael McKean and Nancy Opel, representing the older generation…
…a newly buff Gavin Creel, “Going Down” with some of the tribe members…
…Raúl Esparza, pictured here with Harris Doran, leading the cast in the title song…
…the one-and-only RuPaul in the “My Conviction” sequence. (Girl, you better work!)…
…the show’s dancers “Walking in Space” as Julie Garnyé sings that beautiful song…
…Norm Lewis and Harris Doran singing the “Flesh Failures” section of the moving final scene…
…and the entire cast performing “Let the Sun Shine In.” Hair was directed and choreographed for The Actors’ Fund by Christopher Gattelli and Devenand Janki. Seth Rudetsky was the concert’s artistic producer/musical director.
