Encores! Slates A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Purlie, and The Apple Tree

New York City Center has announced the lineup for its 12th season of Encores! Great American Musicals in Concert, as follows:

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
This musical adaptation of Betty Smith’s novel about a working-class family living in Brooklyn at the turn of the century will play February 10 through 13, 2005. Music by Arthur Schwartz; lyrics by Dorothy Fields; book by George Abbott and Betty Smith, revised by Eleanor Renfield.


Purlie
Based on Ossie Davis’s play Purlie Victorious, about an idealistic young preacher, this musical will play from March 31 through April 3, 2005. Music by Gary Geld; lyrics by Peter Udell; book by Udell, Ossie Davis, and Philip Rose.


The Apple Tree
Kristin Chenoweth will star in this trilogy of one-act musicals about men, women, and temptation, May 12 through 16, 2005. Music by Jerry Bock; lyrics by Sheldon Harnick; book by Bock, Harnick, and Jerome Coopersmith.
