Hairspray, the show that won eight 2003 Tony Awards including Best Musical, will hold open auditions on Monday, September 29 from 9am to 5pm at the HERE Arts Center (145 Sixth Avenue, between Spring and Broome streets). Performers of all types are encouraged to sing for the opportunity to be cast in both the Broadway production and the recently launched national tour.

The show, which currently stars Harvey Fierstein in New York and Bruce Vilanch on tour, tells the story of a young girl who fights discrimination in Baltimore. Thomas Meehan and Mark O’Donnell wrote the show’s book, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman the score, and the production was directed by Jack O’Brien. All five men received Tony Awards for their contributions.

The auditions in New York will begin a nationwide talent search; additional open auditions for the show are scheduled in Boston on October 20 and in Chicago on January 15.
