It has just been confirmed that the McCarter Theatre production of Nilo Cruz’s Anna in the Tropics, the 2003 Pulitzer Prize winner for drama and the 2003 American Theatre Critics/Steinberg New Play winner, will be coming to Broadway in November. The show will begin previews at the Royale Theatre on Saturday, November 1 and will open on Sunday, November 16.

The production, now playing at the McCarter in Princeton, New Jersey, is directed by Emily Mann and has scenic design by Robert Brill, costume design by Anita Yavich, and lighting design by Peter Kaczorowski. The McCarter cast features Jimmy Smits, Vanessa Aspillaga, Priscilla Lopez, John Ortiz, Daphne Rubin-Vega, and David Zayas; none of these actors has been officially confirmed for the Broadway production as of yet.

Anna in the Tropics is set in a Cuban-American cigar factory in 1929. It tells of the unforeseen circumstances that result when a new “lector” — a man employed to educate and entertain the workers — begins reading to them from Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina.
