In the works for some time now, the transfer of The Westport Country Playhouse production of Our Town to Broadway is finally official. The production, directed by James Naughton and starring Paul Newman, will open at the Booth Theatre on December 4 for a nine-week limited engagement.

This Our Town began in June 2002 in Westport, Connecticut and quickly made headlines, largely due to Newman’s appearance in the role of the Stage Manager. Since early summer, there has been talk of bringing the production to Broadway. The Roundabout Theatre Company recently cancelled plans for its own staging of the Thornton Wilder classic, presumably — at least in part — to avoid competition with the Westport version.

In addition to Newman, who will be acting on Broadway for the first time since 1964, the cast of Our Town includes Jane Curtin, Stephen Spinella, Jake Robards, Jayne Atkinson, John Braden, Frank Converse, Jeffrey DeMunn, Mia Dillon, Ben Fox, and Maggie Lacey. The show starts previews on November 22 and the final performance is set for January 26, 2003. Tickets will be sold through TeleCharge beginning October 13 but will not be available at the Booth’s box office until October 28.
