Theater Types to Take Back Times Square With Broadway on Broadway Concert on September 15

Folks whose major passion is football will probably be elsewhere when Times Square, recently the site of a massive kick-off celebration of the new NFL season, is filled with the sights and sounds of the 11th annual Broadway on Broadway concert on Sunday, September 15, beginning at 11:30am.

The free event will be hosted by Joey Fatone, the ‘N Sync veteran who is now appearing as Mark Cohen in Rent, and Marissa Jaret Winokur, the young female star of the smash-hit Broadway musical version of Hairspray. Each year, Broadway on Broadway features numbers from current and upcoming musicals as well as personal appearances by stars of the Main Stem’s straight plays. Among those scheduled to participate on the 15th are Vanessa Williams, Kathleen Turner, Jason Biggs, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Anne Heche, Carol Burnett, and Steven Weber. Cast members of current tuners from Urinetown to Oklahoma! to Hairspray will perform excerpts from those shows, and sneak peeks at the soon-to-open Flower Drum Song, Dance of the Vampires, Amour, and Man of La Mancha will be offered. As if all of that wasn’t exciting enough, rock superstar Billy Joel, whose music serves as the basis for Moving Out, is scheduled to introduce a number from that show.

Broadway on Broadway is produced by the League of American Theatres and Producers and the Times Square Business Improvement District; for the second consecutive year, Toys “R” Us will be the major sponsor of the event.
