Broadway Shows Resume Performances Tonight

A spokesman for the League of American Theatres and Producers told TheaterMania that all Broadway shows will be up and running tonight, Thursday, September 13. Performances had been cancelled yesterday afternoon, last night, and Tuesday night due to conditions created by the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. We understand that all shows are offering refunds, or exchanges where available, on tickets for cancelled performances; if you are holding any such tickets, please contact the service or box office through which you purchased them.

The island of Manhattan basically remains closed below 14th Street except to emergency vehicles and authorized personnel, so any Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway shows housed in theaters in that area–including Blue Man Group, Down South, First Love, L-O-V-E, Love, Janis, Naked Boys Singing, Stomp, The Donkey Show, tick..tick…BOOM! and others–will almost certainly not be playing this evening.

The Actors’ Fund of America has organized two drop in support groups from 3pm to 4:30pm today and tomorrow “for anyone in the entertainment community who is in need of support.” These meetings will be held at the Fund’s main office in Manhattan at 729 7th Avenue, 10th Floor. Those who wish to attend do not need to call in advance.

As exemplified by its motto “the show must go on,” the theater has served as a source of comfort and continuity in times of tragedy, so we can all look forward to the resumption of performances even as we mourn the tragic loss of life and property in yesterday’s attack. In the words of one Broadway press agent, “We’ll get through this as best we can. We’ll be brave and we’ll be strong.”
