Artists from the US and Ireland Converge for Origin Theatre Company’s Sixth Annual 1st Irish Festival
The sixth annual edition of Origin’s 1st Irish, the world’s only theater festival dedicated to Irish playwrights, runs from September 2 to 29. Curated and coordinated by the New York-based Origin Theatre Company, the month-long festival features productions in a stimulating array of styles by contemporary Irish playwrights from Belfast, Dublin, Boston, and New York. The festival’s launch event took place Tuesday, August 27 at Mutual of America.
Productions include The Cure, by Conal Creedon; McGoldrick’s Thread, by Marianne Driscoll; the site-specific The Compass Rose, by Ronan Noone; The Life and Sort of Death of Eric Argyle, by Ross Dungan; I Can See Clearly Now (The Wheelchair on my Face), by Sonya Kelly; A Lady is Waiting, by Anto Nolan; The Morons, by Dan McCormick, and The International, by Tim Ruddy.
2013 blue-ribbon jury members include Broadway actresses Geraldine Hughes (Cyrano de Bergerac) and Sarah Rice (Sweeney Todd), as well as journalists Leslie Hoban Blake and Andy Lefkowitz. At the conclusion of the festival, the jury will commence to vote upon festival winners in four categories.
The newly rebranded Origin’s 1st Irish, powered by Origin Theatre Company, runs from September 2 through 29. The closing-night ceremony is set for Monday, September 30. Origin, under artistic director George C. Heslin, is celebrating its eleventh season producing the New York and American premieres of plays by emerging European playwrights.
