Hanne Tierney’s Strange Tales of Liaozhai to Play HERE

HERE will launch its 20th season with Hanne Tierney’s Strange Tales of Liaozhai. Created in collaboration with composer/musician Jane Wang and projection artist Hannah Wasileski, the work will run September 6-22, with an opening set for September 9. It is a presentation of HERE’s Dream Music Puppetry Program and FiveMyles.

In Strange Tales of Liaozhai, Tierney operates a counterweight system of over 100 strings to bring to life a full stage of objects while telling a variety of stories adapted from 18th century supernatural Chinese folk tales compiled by scholar Pu Songling. The production features accompaniment by Wang, who performs original compositions on toy pianos, the double bass, and self-constructed instruments.

The manipulation is performed by Tierney, with Shawn Lane and Jamey McGilray. Lighting design is by Trevor Brown, with sound by Phil Soltanoff.
