Rosemary Harris, Carla Gugino, and Jim Dale will star in The Roundabout Theatre’s Broadway premiere of Athol Fugard’s The Road to Mecca, beginning December 16 at the American Airlines Theatre. The production, which will open officially on January 17, will be directed by Gordon Edelstein.

The play concerns a South African widow who is befriended by a young teacher and a local priest. It was presented Off-Broadway at the Promenade Theatre and won the 1988 New York Drama Critics Circle for Best Foreign Play. A film version was made in 1992.

Harris won the Tony Award for The Lion in Winter and has received eight additional nominations, most recently for The Royal Family. Gugino has appeared on Broadway in After the Fall and Desire Under the Elms, and appeared Off-Broadway in the Roundabout’s Suddenly Last Summer. Dale won the Tony Award for Barnum and most recently appeared on Broadway in the Roundabout’s Threepenny Opera.

Edelstein has directed the Roundabout productions of The Homecoming, The Glass Menagerie, and A Skull in Connemara.
