Lillias White Set for Big Maybelle: Soul of the Blues Readings

Tony Award winner Lillias White will star as Maybelle Smith in a series of free staged readings of Big Maybelle: Soul of the Blues to be presented September 13-15 at the Pearl Studios as part of AMAS Musical Theater’s Six O’Clock Musical Theatre Lab. Paul Levine has written and will direct the piece, which will have musical direction by Kenny Seymour

Smith was a celebrated 50’s era blues singer best known for her hit “Candy,” and the show charts not only the performer’s successes, but also her struggles with her weight, drugs, and her relationships with men.

White is currently starring on Broadway in Fela!. She won a Tony Award for her work in The Life, and her other stage credits include Barnum, Dreamgirls, Cats, Rock’N’Roll! The First 5000 Years, and Chicago. She received an Emmy Award for her recurring role on Sesame Street.
