Stage and screen star Eddie Izzard will join the cast of Showtime’s United States of Tara, according to published reports. The series will begin production next month in anticipation of a season premiere in 2011.

The show focuses on a woman (Toni Collette), who is grappling with Dissociative Identity Disorder. Izzard will play a psychology professor who is skeptical about the disease but his growing fascination with her will lead him to further exploration of the condition.

Izzard was recently seen on Broadway in David Mamet’s Race. He received a Tony Award nomination for the Roundabout Theatre’s revival of A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, and his other stage credits include Lenny and Mamet’s The Cryptogram. His film and television credits include The Riches, Velvet Goldmine, Shadow of the Vampire, The Cat’s Meow, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, and Across the Universe.
