Site-Specific Theater Piece, The Provenance of Beauty, Is Bus Ride Through South Bronx

Poet Claudia Rankine’s The Provenance of Beauty: A South Bronx Travelogue will be the next production offered by The Foundry Theatre. Created by Rankine with Foundry artistic director Melanie Joseph, and staged by Joseph and Shawn Sides, Provenance will run from September 5 – October 25.

The piece will be performed on a bus that will transport audiences from The Elemendorf Reformed Church in Spanish Harlem across the Harlem River into the South Bronx. While theatergoers are on the bus which will travel through the neighborhood, without stopping, for 90 minutes, they will hear Rankine’s text, delivered by Sarah Nina Hayon in a live performance and Raul Castillo and Randy Danson in recorded performances. The script comments on locations and landmarks in the area such as a factory that has been disguised as townhouses and a theater where La Lupe once held court.
