The producers for a planned Broadway production of Busker Alley, featuring songs by Richard and Robert Sherman, have announced they will no longer continue with the show, and will return money to their investors.

Based on the 1938 movie St. Martin’s Lane, the musical is about a street entertainer who falls in love with a much younger woman who longs to be a big star in the theater. It features a book by the late AJ Carothers.

The production, originally announced back in 2007, was to star Jim Dale and be directed by Tony Walton. Dale starred in a one-night-only benefit presentation of the show for the York Theatre Company in 2006, opposite Glenn Close. A 1995 pre-Broadway tour of the musical, starring Tommy Tune, was derailed when the star injured his foot.
