Chita Rivera, Wing to Return to Birdland in October

Two-time Tony Award winner Chita Rivera will return to Birdland, October 14-17, while international singing sensation Wing will make her second appearance a the club, October 26-27.

As previously reported, Rivera was recently named by President Obama as one of 16 recipients of the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is awarded to individuals who make an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, or a cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. President Obama will present the awards at a ceremony on Wednesday, August 12 at The White House. Among the other recipients are actor Sidney Poitier, Senator Edward Kennedy, scientist Stephen Hawking, tennis professional Billie Jean King, former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, and political leader Desmond Tutu.

Rivera received the coveted Kennedy Center Honor in 2002. Her many Broadway credits include Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Rink, Chicago, Bye Bye Birdie, Jerry’s Girls, West Side Story and The Dancer’s Life, an autobiographical musical about her celebrated life in theater. She recently starred in the Signature Theatre production of The Visit.
