Ben Crawford, Robb Sapp Join Broadway’s Shrek the Musical

Robb Sapp will succeed John Tartaglia in the role of Pinocchio in Shrek the Musical, at the Broadway Theatre, beginning August 18. As previously announced, Ben Crawford will succeed Brian d’Arcy James in the title role of the musical, beginning November 10. The musical has also announced the release of a new block of tickets, which are being sold through May 30, 2010.

The show, which is based on the story and characters from William Steig’s book Shrek! as well as the DreamWorks Animation film Shrek, features book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize-winner David Lindsay-Abaire, and music by Jeanine Tesori. Jason Moore directs, with choreography by Josh Prince.

The cast currently also features Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona, Christopher Sieber as Lord Farquaad, and Daniel Breaker as Donkey, along with Cameron Adams, Tessa Albertson, Rozi Baker, Haven Burton, Bobby Daye, Ryan Duncan, Sarah Jane Everman, Aymee Garcia, Maya Goldman, Justin Greer, Colleen Hawks, Lisa Ho, Chris Hoch, Marty Lawson, Carolyn Ockert-Haythe, Frankie Paparone, Denny Paschall, Eric Petersen, Keven Quillon, Heather Jane Rolff, Jennifer Simard, Rachel Stern, Dennis Stowe, David F.M. Vaughn, Ryan Worsing, and Kirsten Wyatt.

Crawford is currently the stand-by for the role of Shrek. He made his Broadway debut in the revival of Les Misérables, where he understudied the roles of both Javert and Jean Valjean. Other credits include Oliver!, Oklahoma!, Carousel, White Christmas, Guys and Dolls, and Assassins. Sapp appeared as Boq in Broadway’s Wicked, with other credits including Happiness, Zanna Don’t!, Enter Laughing, and Johnny Guitar.
