Chris Calloway Dies at 62

Chris Calloway, who starred as Minnie Fay in the Broadway production of Hello, Dolly opposite her father Cab Calloway, died in New Mexico on August 7 of cancer. She was 62.

In addition to appearing in that legendary production, in which Pearl Bailey played the title role, Calloway also appeared as Brenda in the 1973 Broadway revival of The Pajama Game and understudied star Barbara McNair as Babe.

She appeared in Santa Fe, where she lived, in Lady Day at the Emerson Bar & Grill as well as a one-person show Clouds of Joy: The Spiritual Joy of Blanche Calloway, about her aunt, who was a pioneering bandleader. Calloway was also a well-respected jazz singer.

She is survived by her mother, Nuffi, her sisters, Cecelia and Cabella, and numerous other relatives.
