The much-talked-about Broadway revival of Grease opened last night at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, with an after-party at the famed Roseland Ballroom. Here are the show’s stars Max Crumm and Laura Osnes, who were chosen to play the lead roles of Danny and Sandy by viewers of the NBC television series Grease: You’re The One That I Want.
Grease producer David Ian, director Kathleen Marshall, and co-creator Jim Jacobs, who judged the TV series, had a happy opening night reunion.
Matthew Saldivar and Jenny Powers, who play tough teen sweethearts Kenickie and Rizzo, earned strong reviews from the critics.
Broadway favorite Stephen R. Buntrock, who plays the show’s Teen Angel, brought his equally talented wife Erin Dilly to the party.
Many famed alumni of Grease were also on hand for the big event. Here’s Didi Conn (right), who played Frenchy in the 1978 film version, with Kristen Wyatt, the current revival’s “Beauty School Dropout.”
Barry Pearl, who played Doody in the 1978 film, caught up with the character’s current portrayer, Ryan Patrick Binder.
Look at two stars from the show’s original 1972 Broadway production: Ilene Kristen (who played cheerleader Patty Simcox) and Carole Demas — the original Sandy!
Stage and screen favorite Marilu Henner played the role of material girl Marty during the original Broadway run.
The lovely Deborah Gibson — here with Jonathan Knight — was one of many stars to portray Rizzo in the Broadway revival which ran from 1994 to 1998. She also played Sandy in the show’s London production.
The opening brought out a slew of celebrity well-wishers, including Broadway and film director Rob Marshall, who was on hand to support little sister Kathleen.
Nikki Blonsky, the star of the film Hairspray, and former American Idol contestant Constantine Maroulis — who co-starred with Matthew Saldivar in Broadway’s The Wedding Singer — were surrounded by fans at the theater.
Here’s handsome Anthony Fedorov — another Idol contestant-turned-theater star — with gorgeous gal pal Elisa Rodriguez.
The inimitable Jo Anne Worley, on her night off from The Drowsy Chaperone, didn’t just let her smile be her umbrella.
Spring Awakening star Jonathan Groff is a welcome addition to any celebration!
Finally, here’s cable television superstar Stephen Colbert with his adorable daughter, Madeline.
