The film version of Golda’s Balcony, William Gibson’s play about Golda Meir, will begin a commercial run at the Quad Cinema in New York City on October 10. Directed by Jeremy Kagan, the film will star Valerie Harper, who played Meir on the show’s national tour. Runs in other cities, including Los Angeles, will begin later this year.

Based on the life and work of Meir, Israel’s first female Prime Minister, the film is framed within the crisis days of the 1973 Yom Kippur war, when Meir considered using nuclear weapons to ensure Israel’s survival. Harper will play numerous roles within the film.

Harper’s Broadway credits include Wildcat, Subways Are for Sleeping, and The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife. She is best known for her Emmy Award-winning role as Rhoda Morgenstern on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Rhoda. Her other film and television credits include Story Theater, Freebie and the Bean, Blame it on Rio Valerie, and Less Than Perfect.

Kagan’s other film credits include The Chosen, Heroes, and The Journey of Natty Gann.
