Defiance, the new play by Pulitzer Prize winner John Patrick Shanley that had a workshop production last month at the New York Stage & Film at Vassar College, will begin previews on February 9, 2006 at Manhattan Theater Club Stage 1. The production, to be directed by 2005 Tony Award winner Doug Hughes, will officially open February 28.

Defiance is set on a United States Marine Corps base in North Carolina in 1971. Two officers, one black and one white, are on a collision course over race, women, and the high cost of doing the right thing. The play is about power, love, and responsibility.

The NYS&F production starred Chris Cooper, Dana Delany, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, and Chris Bauer. No casting has been announced for the MTC production. Shanley and Hughes are currently represented on Broadway by Doubt, which was first presented at MTC in 2004.
