John Cullum will star alongside Rosemary Harris in the American premiere production of Ariel Dorfman’s The Other Side at Manhattan Theater Club Stage I, beginning performance on November 10 and set to open officially open December 6. The production will be directed by Blanka Zizka, co-artistic director of Philadelphia’s Wilma Theater.

In this unexpectedly comic work by Dorfman, the author of Death and the Maiden, a man and woman in a war-torn country pass their days identifying the casualties. When peace and a border guard arrive, their bleak, predictable world unravels.

Cullum is a two-time Tony Award winner for Shenandoah and On the Twentieth Century; he also received Tony nominations for Urinetown and On a Clear Day You Can See Forever. Cullum’s other New York stage credits include Camelot, Show Boat, and Sin: A Cardinal Deposed. He is best known to television viewers for his role of Holling the bartender on the hit CBS series Northern Exposure.

The British-born Harris won a Tony for her portrayal of Eleanor in The Lion in Winter and has been nominated for the award seven other times. Among her many New York credits are A Delicate Balance, All Over, Hay Fever, The Royal Family, and A Streetcar Named Desire. Harris received an Academy Award nomination for her work in Tom & Viv, and she is well known for her appearances in the popular Spider Man films. She is the mother of Tony Award-winning actress Jennifer Ehle.

Zizka, a multiple winner of the prestigious Barrymore Award, has directed more than 50 plays and musicals for the Wilma, including Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train, Red, and Quills. She directed the world premiere of Dael Orlandersmith’s Yellowman at the Manhattan Theatre Club and went on to helm several regional productions of that play.
