Calling All Cattle… and Lions and Nubians

Get out your lion mask and your Nubian drag, Frances! Open auditions — i.e., anybody can attend, regardless of union affiliation or lack of same — for the Broadway productions of Disney’s The Lion King and Aida will be held on Monday, August 13 from 10am to 5pm at The Apollo Theatre, located at 253 West 125th Street between 7th and 8th avenues in Harlem.

According to a press release, the productions are seeking “dynamic pop, rock, or gospel singers for various roles including a Nubian princess, Nubian servants, African lions and lionesses, and Egyptian warriors.” The release goes on to say that “men and women of all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to attend,” and mentions that “acting ability is a plus.” Each auditionee should bring sheet music and be prepared to sing a song that shows off his or her voice; pop, rock, or gospel tunes are preferred, and musical theater songs are discouraged. Hopefuls should provide a picture and résumé or, failing that, a recent photo and a list of any performance experience.

And if you’re sure that this sort of cattle call is just a publicity stunt that offers no chance of actually getting into either of these shows… well, don’t be so sure. One lucky young woman who attended the open call for tappers for 42nd Street earlier this year is now a happy member of the company of that hit Broadway musical. So: Dare to dream!
