After 28 previews and 188 regular performances at the Winter Garden Theatre, the new Broadway musical Rocky has announced that it will play its final show on August 17.

Based on Sylvester Stallone's Oscar-winning 1976 film about the underdog Philadelphia boxer who takes on heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, the musical adaptation features a book by Stallone and Thomas Meehan (Annie), a score by the Tony-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime), and direction by Tony nominee Alex Timbers (Peter and the Starcatcher).

Rocky opened on March 13 starring Andy Karl in the title role opposite Margo Seibert as his love interest, Adrian, with Terence Archie as Apollo Creed, Dakin Matthews as Mickey, Danny Mastrogiorgio as Paulie, and Jennifer Mudge as Gloria. In addition to Karl's Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Musical, the production earned three other Tony nominations in the categories of scenic design (Christopher Barreca), lighting design (Christopher Akerlind), and choreography (Kelly Devine and Steven Hoggett).
