In celebration of the final weeks of its long Broadway run, the Tony-winning musical Newsies has announced plans to offer a limited number of tickets via lottery at the Nederlander Theatre for every performance from July 28-August 23. Names will be drawn at random, and winners will have the opportunity to purchase up to two $30 tickets to that day's performance.
Entries will be accepted at the Nederlander Theatre box office according to the following schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 4:30pm; Tuesday evenings at 5:30pm; Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 10:30am; and Sunday matinees at 11:30am. Names will be drawn at random 30 minutes after entries have begun being accepted. Winners must be present at the time of drawing.
Newsies, which recently announced it would close on August 24, won Tony Awards for Best Original Score Written for the Theatre and Best Choreography. It features music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, with a book by Harvey Fierstein. The musical, inspired by the 1992 film of the same name, tells the story of a group of tenacious newsboys at the turn of the last century who band together to form a union and lead a strike after selling prices are raised. At the time of Newsies' closing, it will have played 1,005 Broadway performances.
