Garry Marshall will helm the New York premiere of Mike Bencivenga's film noir-inspired comedy Billy & Ray.

Famed director, writer, and producer Garry Marshall (Happy Days, Pretty Woman) will direct the New York premiere of Mike Bencivenga's new comedy Billy & Ray during the Vineyard Theatre's 2014-15 season. Performances will begin October 2 in advance of an October 20 opening. Marshall returns to the play after having directed its world premiere production in spring 2013 at Burbank, California's Falcon Theatre, which he cofounded with his daughter Kathleen Marshall LaGambina.

Billy & Ray charts the birth of the film-noir genre. Set in 1940s Hollywood, the story follows the true story of literary odd couple Oscar-winning filmmaker Billy Wilder and novelist Raymond Chandler as they attempt to adapt Double Indemnity for the screen. The cast and creative team for Billy & Ray will be announced at a later date.

As previously announced, the Vineyard Theatre's 2014-15 season will also feature the world premiere musical Brooklynite, helmed by Tony-winning director Michael Mayer (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) and featuring a book by Peter Lerman and Michael Mayer, music and lyrics by Peter Lerman, and choreography by Steven Hoggett (Once).

Playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (Appropriate) will also make his Vineyard mainstage debut with Gloria (changed from its earlier title Gloria; or Ambition), directed by Evan Cabnet (Outside People), in spring 2015.
