Grammy Award Winner Fantasia Barrino Announced as First Guest Star in Broadway’s After Midnight

Barrino will channel the Cotton Club era, opening After Midnight as its first guest-star headliner.

Plans have been confirmed for Grammy Award-winning recording artist, “American Idol” season three winner, and Theatre World Award winner Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple) to join the Broadway production of After Midnight, serving as its first of several guest stars. Performances are set to begin October 18 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre with an official opening set for November 3. Barrino is scheduled to perform with the show through February 9, 2014.

Warren Carlyle directs this new production of Cotton Club Parade, which enjoyed two sold-out engagements at City Center. After Midnight celebrates jazz legend Duke Ellington and his years performing at the legendary Cotton Club. The production plans to revive the Cotton Club’s tradition of featuring weekly guest stars, and will present a series of notable artists in limited-engagement appearances throughout its run. The musical features Ellington’s original arrangements, performed by a 17-piece big band that has been hand-selected by living jazz legend Wynton Marsalis.
