Cynthia Nixon will star as Vivian Bearing in Margaret Edson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Wit, which will begin previews on January 5 at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Lynne Meadow will direct the production, which will officially open on January 26.

Nixon won a Tony Award for her performance in David Lindsay-Abaire’s Rabbit Hole. Among her other Broadway credits are The Women, Indiscretions, The Heidi Chronicles, Hurlyburly, The Real Thing, and The Philadelphia Story. The actress is perhaps best known for her portrayal of Miranda in Sex and the City, both on television and in its film incarnations. In addition, she currently appears on Showtime’s The Big C.

Wit follows brilliant and exacting poetry professor Bearing as she undergoes experimental treatment for cancer. A scholar who devoted her life to academia, she must now face the irony and injustice of becoming the subject of research.

Additional casting and creative team will be announced shortly.

In related news, MTC’s upcoming world premiere of David Auburn’s The Columnist, which had been previously announced for January dates, will now begin previews on Tuesday, April 3 and open Wednesday, April 25 at the Friedman Theatre.
