Elliott Kastner, Produced Equus and A Little Night Music Movies, Has Died

Film producer Elliott Kastner has died after a battle with cancer, according to a report in The New York Times. He was 80.

Kastner was responsible for bringing Equus and A Little Night Music to the screen and his first movie, Bus Riley’s Back in Town featured a screenplay by playwright William Inge. Among his other films are Harper, Where Eagles Dare, The Long Goodbye, and The Missouri Breaks.

He began his career as a literary agent and often turned to novelists for his movies, including Vladimir Nabokov, William Goldman, Iris Murdoch, Alistair MacLean and Thomas McGuane. Before he turned to producing independently, Kastner worked at Universal as vice president of production.

He is survived by a son and a daughter, as well as three stepsons.
